Get Out of Your Own Way

“…If you truly want to be happy, get out of your own way! Divorce your past, marry your dreams…”
-Michael Nitti
We are sometimes our biggest obstacles. In order to overcome our obstacles we need to have some candid conversations with ourselves. Most of the time we do not achieve a level of greatness because of this little four letter word- FEAR. A lot of the times we are afraid because of the unknown. If we knew we would have a positive outcome, we would not be fearful of taking that next step. If we knew we were getting the job, we would not be afraid to send our resume. If we knew we were going to get investors, we would not be afraid to pitch our proposals.
It is time that we “divorce our past, and marry our dreams.” We are fearful because of rejection from the past. We are fearful because we have been told no. We are fearful because we let doubters and naysayers get in our heads. To truly live THE GOOD LIFE we need get out of our own way. Fear is something that is mental. It is something that we conceive in our own minds.
So think about what it is that you truly want for your life. What are your dreams? Where do you see yourself next month? Next year? Five years from now? Now ask yourself, what are you doing TODAY to get there. We need to be married to our dreams. We all know that marriage takes work. Marriage just not work because you have rings on your finger. With marriage there comes a commitment, so what are you committed to? How are you showing that commitment?
So I’ve learned that in order to get out of your own way you must do the following:
  1. Be Confident– We are deserving of all things good and destined by God. Our confidence should be in knowing who we are within Christ and that nothing can come in between that. No one can give you confidence. That is something internal. We all have our insecurities, but we cannot let them hold us down.
  2. Be Disciplined– Discipline is key! You have to be consistent and do the work. You have to be consistent with your daily activities. Discipline prevents distractions. So get your priorities in order.
  3. Be Prepared- What’s worse then being blessed with your heart’s desires when you aren’t ready? Be prepared for the outcome that you want at all times. When a blessing is coming your way, you can’t say, “Wait, I’m not ready.” When opportunity knocks be prepared to receive it. Also, be prepared by setting goals and a strategic plan of action. Being prepared doesn’t only indicate being ready, it indicates getting ready so DO THE WORK.
  4. Be Grateful- Everything will not happen the way you want, when you want. Things may not necessarily happen the way you want, but you have to be grateful for everything because there is a lesson in everything. So even when you are experiencing trials reflect on your actions, your decisions, and new learnings.
  5. Be Fearless- Nothing can stop you from reaching your goal. You just have to understand that it is not on your time, but God’s time. So if your faith is strong, fear cannot be present, because faith and fear cannot live together.

So here’s to a new chapter of getting out of our own way.
